College Visit Checklist: What to Look For on Campus

It’s easy to be dazzled by a manicured quad and a shiny new gym. But the things that will actually shape your four years are often the ones the official tour glosses over.

Eat where students eat

Dining halls tell you a lot. Is the food good? Is it busy at normal hours? Do people linger and talk, or grab and go? You’ll eat there hundreds of times — it matters.

See a real dorm

Not the model room. Ask your guide to show you where they actually live, and what an average room looks like. Check the laundry, the common spaces, and how far it is from class.

Read the bulletin boards

Flyers for clubs, events, and study groups are an unfiltered snapshot of campus life. If the boards are buzzing, the community usually is too.

Ask your guide the one question they wish they’d asked before enrolling. The answer is always revealing.
